About this Event

MATE WAREWARE SEMINAR

We warmly welcome whānau, carers, kaumātua, koroua, kuia, taipakeke, kaiāwhina hauora (Health Workers), and community members to attend this Mate Wareware Seminar hosted by Huria Trust and facilitated by Te Huinga Hinengaro – the Centre for Brain Research at the University of Auckland – at Huria Marae on Friday, 12 September, from 9.30am to 1.30pm.

Te Huinga Hinengaro is a kaupapa Māori-led rōpū dedicated to raising awareness of mate wareware (dementia) and supporting Māori communities.

The seminar will be led by:

  • Centre for Brain Research Deputy Director Māori, Dr Makarena Dudley (Te Rarawa, Te Aupōuri, Ngāti Kahu)
  • Centre for Brain Research, Director, Sir Richard Faull (Ngāti Rāhiri, Te Ātiawa) and,
  • Neurological Foundation of New Zealand CEO, Rich Easton

Dr Makarena Dudley (Te Rarawa, Te Aupōuri, Ngāti Kahu) has spent the past 10 years focusing on dementia in kaumātua Māori. She is deputy director Māori in the University’s Centre for Brain Research; a clinical neuropsychologist, and is recognised as a world-leading researcher on Indigenous health, and is a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to people with dementia, particularly Māori.

We recognise mate wareware (dementia) affects Māori more than any other group in Aotearoa, but many whānau don’t have access to the support, diagnosis or information they need. Whānau can kōrero with dementia specialists, ask questions, share concerns, and learn what help is available.

This hui is a space to:• Kōrero with dementia specialists• Ask questions & share concerns• Learn about support services• Recognise early signs of mate wareware• Gain practical tools for whānau care

They are co-designing a new model of dementia care grounded in Mātauranga Māori and modern science.
