About this Event
Over the last decade we have sung major works by Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Brahms, Bruckner and others with a large professional orchestra. The performances have been broadcast over WMHT-FM 89.1 and enjoyed live by over a thousand in the audience. This year continues this core of the Austro-German canon with works by Haydn, Beethoven and Mozart. All of these works had their premier in Vienna at the height of the classical period and all three were written in the last years of their lives, when they were at the height of their creative powers. The concert will open with the seldom heard late gem by Beethoven, Calm Seas and Prosperous Voyage. This dramatic work starts with a stark depiction of a dead calm out in the ocean. The breeze picks up and we are off on a joyous Beethovenian romp. The largest part of the program will be Haydn’s The Seasons. This was written just after the universal success of his other great oratorio, The Creation, sung by Berkshire Lyric in 2018. This secular work, sung in English, takes us musically through the various seasons with the awakening of spring, thunder storms, hunting scenes, summer walks and more . The concert concludes with the powerfully uplifting final chorus of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
