John first learned broom making while a student at Berea College when he was given his first on-campus job at the broom making shop with Johnny Reed, Berea College's resident broom maker. Over the decades since, he has taught innumerable folks how to make brooms and has even performed for the crowned heads of Europe! (Well, that may be an exaggeration, but if I were a crowned head in Europe, I'd make sure to bring him over to teach me how to make a broom!)

Along with approximately sixty other vendors, John and his wife, Susan, will be demonstrating and selling his handcrafted brooms during the 39th annual Exchange Place Living History Farm Spring Garden Fair in Kingsport, TN. The festival will will be held Saturday, April 26, 2025 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.), and on Sunday, April 27, 2025 (noon-5 p.m.). The Spring Garden Fair is a celebration that fills the grounds of the historic site with thousands of plants, demonstrations of springtime activities on a 19th century farmstead, the sharing of garden/farming wisdom, handcrafted garden art, and more.
