Join us for a master class with Rule Breaker exhibiting artist Nikki Leone where we’ll explore abstract compositions and textile art inspired by her artistic viewpoint. Through a combination of insightful discussion and hands-on practice in the studio, participants will learn how to translate their ideas into stunning textile creations. We’ll begin by taking a tour of Leone’s exhibition to hear about her inspirations and process. Then, we’ll head back to the studio to see samples of her early textile work and explore the fundamentals of punch needle art before beginning our own projects. Along the way, Leone will share playful practices and tips to help eliminate self-doubt, speed up the creative process, and embrace the necessity of revision in art. We’ll gain insights into creating captivating compositions and spend time practicing with our tools and materials before moving on to more independent work.
As students are working, Leone will demonstrate the use of a tufting gun, share tips about selecting and maintaining tufting tools, and show finishing techniques like carving into the fibers and adding rug backing. Participants can also try their hand at using the tufting gun during this time. This workshop is designed for all levels, from beginners eager to learn punch needling to experienced artists looking to explore new techniques and engage with like-minded practitioners.
Students will each leave with one 7-inch round artwork. All materials are provided.
There will be a 30-minute lunch break, so please bring along a bagged lunch.
