No, it wasn’t in Jerusalem.
After persecutions broke out there against the Apostles, all of them left Jerusalem to begin their missions. Did the Apostles leave Mary behind, alone in Jerusalem? St. John made his way to Ephesus in Asia Minor (today Turkey). His Gospel tells us that Jesus entrusted Mary to John’s care at the foot of the Cross and “from that hour, that disciple took her into his own home.” (John 19:27). The ancient stone home was discovered in 1891 in Ephesus by Lazarist priests using the “visions” of a German nun, Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, as a guide. The home has been visited by three Popes since 1967.
