On her 21st birthday in 1943, Reading native Mary Jane Painter withdrew from Albright College and enlisted in the Women's Army Corps. She worked as a Cryptographic Analyst in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II, receiving several commendations and rising to the rank of Sergeant. On Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 10:00 A.M., the Berks History Center will host a presentation on the wartime experiences of Mary Jane Painter Thompson. Presented by her daughter, Linda Thompson Thomas, the event will cover Mary Jane's journey from basic training in Georgia to her service in North Africa and Europe. The program will feature several remarkable photographs captured by Mary Jane during her service.
This program will be held in person, inside the BHC Museum Auditorium. The cost of this program is $5 for BHC members and $8 for non-members. The program fee includes admission to the BHC Museum. Coffee, hot tea, juice, and light refreshments will be made available for participants at 9:30 AM.
