Vernissage: July 02 19h
Finissage: July 31 15–18h
In her first solo show in Germany Paukova’s characters are on heat.
Stepping away from her usual indoors domestika laden with iPads, iPhones or laptops, the exhibited scenes celebrate naked feet, relationships, flowers, naps, linen and everything tactile and in between. Friendships and group activities are prioritised, time alone is spent mostly to recharge. The illustrated characters are caught off-guard and are socially and carnally hungry. Playful, unsupervised and touchy, they lounge, they gawk, they provoke, the post-pandemic tactility is here. Stresses and the heartbreaks of the past fourteen months are covered with a layer of the sweaty play, the heat is on.
Note: A post-pandemic human should be a human on heat right? Heated by the weather, heated by co-humans, heated by life! Although this heat varies in scale and impact, nevertheless, it is here! Here to help counteract that post-covid despair, bitterness, fatigue, boredom, loneliness, alienation, and grief. Hello heat!
BIO
Martina Paukova (1983) is a Slovak illustrator based in Berlin. After studying political science and then relocating to London to study graphic design, she has worked mostly commercially and is currently represented by two leading illustration agencies - Agent Pekka (Helsinki) and Making Pictures (London). Paukova enjoys drawing all things commonplace, major theme being what it is to be a human in a digital world. Here Paukova repeatedly explores the concept of ‘the everyday’ - a fascination present in her work from the very beginning. Her trademark characters are gawky, lanky and somewhat awkward; and set in flattened and spatially challenged environments. Her scenes are bold and colourful, presence of the gadgets is a must. Paukova’s usual vectors span topics like home, office, indoors, working life, technology and relationships, and amongst her clients are Google, Apple, The Economist, Die Zeit, or The New Yorker.
