400+1 is continuing its campaign, #MartialtheBlock, in pursuit of justice for Jordan Walton. Jordan was a 21 year old, native Austinite who loved and was loved by his community. Jordan experienced mental illness and was at the peak of an episode when Austin Police Department shot and killed him on February 10th. Join 400+1, Jordan’s family, and #MartialtheBlock campaign volunteers on Saturday, June 26th at 7:30 for a reparations marshal and demonstration in Jordan’s memory at Jordan’s Place, Orisha Land (formerly Rosewood Park). 1. What is a reparations marshal?:
400+1’s reparations marshals are a distribution of funds raised by its ally formation, The Ally Ship. The federation will distribute $100 in reparations funding to any and all Black folx who attend the demonstration, with special priority given to those who live in Orisha Land.
2. Why is 400+1 advocating for someone who was involved in a “hostage situation”?
400+1 believes that in a society in which human need is met universally, violence-especially that imposed by the state-becomes obsolete. The City of Austin has all the resources it needs to meet the needs of its residents, but chooses instead to meet need with violence-often through Austin Police Department. This is wrong and results in the kind of harm experienced by those impacted by Jordan’s mental health crisis on February 10th and in the kind of harm Jordan and his family experienced when he was murdered. Our communities don’t need policing. They need resourcing. They need healing.
3. What is the intended outcome of this campaign?
400+1 is engaged in a protracted struggle for Orisha Land (East Austin). The goal of our campaign is to help people understand why Jordan’s M**der was unjustified, to garner the investment of the community in a Black autonomous zone that can act as a temporary respite from white supremacy and state sanctioned violence, and to antagonize, overextend, and exhaust the resources of the institutions responsible for Jordan Walton’s death.
