Freedom Schools are historically rooted in the Mississippi Freedom Summer project of 1964. Today, Freedom Schools provide a literacy and cultural enrichment program designed to serve children and youth in grades K–12 in communities where quality academic enrichment programming is limited.
Here in Winston-Salem, we have a dozen Freedom Schools sites offering free, 6-week summer enrichment for over 600 student-scholars. Most of these sites are held within WSFCS Title One schools.
The mission of the Winston-Salem Freedom Schools programs is to boost student motivations to read, generate more positive attitudes toward learning, increase self-esteem and connect the needs of children and families to the resources of their communities. After almost a decade, the Winston-Salem Freedom Schools have a proven track record of mitigating the learning loss effects of summer and other events which impact access to learning materials or opportunities.
Community support is critical for providing Freedom Schools to our local students at no cost to their families.
