Martha Ballard was a well known, local midwife and healer. You will be introduced to the many herbs and flowers that she may have used during her life. We will collect herbs to dry and use as we tour the historic gardens of Fort Western. In the kitchen, we will get a closer look at the herbs and discuss the various methods of use and applications.
Martha made her own herbal pills and salves to aid in healing. We will follow receipts to make these items using some of the herbs that were grown in the Fort’s garden.
Martha’s diary will be on hand to see the many entries that she speaks of her visits to the Howard family. How did she administer healing during the times of scarlet fever?
