Summary:
Restoration studies have changed considerably in the past decades with the introduction of digital technologies. This presentation investigates their impact, through the case of Parthenon Fragment 15959. Recovered in 1991 during restoration works on the fifth southern column (NK5) of the Parthenon, this small piece of the Ionic frieze becomes the occasion to discuss one of the most complex interventions carried out by the Committee for the Conservation of the Acropolis Monuments (CCAM/EΣΜΑ) and appreciate the importance of systematically documenting the restoration interventions, as well as the research opportunities that such documentation offers. The fragment offers a fitting example for exploring the role of digital archives, legacy data and computer visualisation in advancing archaeological inquiry regarding the reassessment of sculptural fragments within broader figurative compositions. Drawing on digitized records from the documentation of the Acropolis restoration, together with 3D modelling and photogrammetry, as well as other digital resources, this study shows how digital methods can facilitate new insights into object provenance, material characteristics, and historical context, while also improving access to heritage monuments or their records and fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration. It also provides an opportunity for the presenter to revisit a beloved former working environment and showcase the collaborative effort, teamwork and research spirit that animate public heritage organizations.
All Monday lectures are free and open to the public, but registration is required for access to the Zoom lecture.
