Marking Time is a two person exhibition dedicated to the work of Ako Atikossie and Johny H. Ngbwa. The exhibition brings together two artists whose work engages an obsessive and meditative use of mark making. Creating a form of mapping, these works dialogue with each other around a reflection on the significance of marks as a documententing of time revealing and shaping the temporal spectrum of their making. Ako Atikossie’s meticulous insistence on the minus sign as a repetitive addition to the surfaces of his shaped canvases takes the form of scientific investigations with molecular and elemental dimensions barely concealed. Optical illusion encounters the physical sculptural manipulation of the canvas's surface. Johny H. Ngbwa’s printmaking practice with large scale undulating planes produces a sense of tension and urgency while embracing the viewer in a seemingly expansive landscape. The overlapping of lines that carry topographical descriptions akin to fingerprints are counterposed against deep black expanses of pause. With titles evocative of movement through the natural environment the works harken to those forms of visualizing space devoid of political borders. The works of the show are framed by the theme of the tenth edition of Black History Month Florence, Tempo Rubato. The theme is a reflection on the theft of history and the agency of taking time into our own hands.
