Capital High School will host an electrifying evening of music as internationally renowned electric rock violinist Mark Wood joins forces with the Scorch: Kanawha County Combined High School Orchestra and local middle school ensembles for a one-night-only concert experience.
The program, part of Wood’s groundbreaking “Electrify Your Symphony” (EYS) initiative, will feature the combined strings classes of Capital High School, George Washington High School, Herbert Hoover High School, South Charleston High School, and Charleston Catholic High School, collectively known as Scorch and directed by Dr. Jeffrey Lipscomb, NBCT. They will be joined by the string programs from Horace Mann Middle School (directed by Ms. Olivia Boughton) and John Adams Middle School (directed by Ms. Kaitlyn Wilcoxon).
PBS has called Mark Wood the “Eddie Van Halen of the Violin.” He is best known as the original string master of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, an Emmy-winning composer, and a collaborator with stars including Celine Dion, Billy Joel, and Lenny Kravitz. He is also the founder of Wood Violins, a premier maker of custom electric violins and cellos.
Through his EYS program, Wood transforms student ensembles into high-energy “rock orchestras,” boosting student confidence, motivation, and community engagement while raising support for school music programs. Students will participate in a daylong workshop at Capital High School with Wood, learning not only the music but also how to perform like rock stars.
The October 29th concert program will feature Wood’s own dynamic arrangements of rock and pop classics.
Tickets are available online at capitalhigharts.ludus.com or at the door (until sold out). Prices range from $10–$20 depending on seating. General donations to the high school orchestra program are accepted in addition to the regular ticket price. Donations specifically for the high school spring trip to Kennywood are also possible via the 'Donations' tab on the 'Events' page at capitalhigharts.ludus.com
