About this Event

In recent years, immigrants have been vilified in the halls of Congress, in the media, and in the streets of our cities. Our nation seems to have forgotten how its success has been fueled by the contributions made by immigrants since its very beginning. The depths of their contributions to our country are profound and have enriched us as a nation.

Award-winning photographer Mark Tuschman tells the story of men and women from all over the world in Together We Rise: Immigrants in America. Some came as undocumented immigrants. Some came seeking asylum. And others came traditionally or were granted DACA status. All of them came to work hard, to better their lives, and to become citizens. From farmers and farmworkers, chefs and restaurateurs, doctors, lawyers, judges, and high-tech creators and innovators, each immigrant expresses the desire to contribute fully to our society. They have come here because they deeply admire and respect our democratic values and ideals. As one of these immigrants said so eloquently: “Immigration is the greatest form of flattery.”

Together We Rise: Immigrants in America is more than a beautifully produced photo documentary book. The ultimate goal of Together We Rise is to nurture empathy and compassion, to embrace each other with respect and dignity, bringing forth the better angels of our American nature to help us heal and thrive as a country. The photos and narratives are an eloquent reminder of the creativity, intellect, and essential labor immigrants continue to bring to our unique experiment in freedom and individual liberty. This book is a reminder of how they contribute to our economic prosperity, security, and also to our moral standing in the world.
