MARK GINDICK: DEATH DEFYING SCHTICK:
Mark Gindick gives a highly personal lecture/demonstration about circus and clown life. He traces how a lawyer’s kid in the NY suburbs fell in love with physical comedy and by the end of his teens was touring the country with Ringling Bros (red-nosed, face covered in red and white greasepaint). Rich with humor, honesty, and historical sweep, this lecture/dem showcases a major American clown’s deeply personal journey through all of the major touring circus companies. Mark explains how he got into the circus, thrived, and then after a series of setbacks, almost left the circus forever.
Through this presentation, audiences will gain insight into the day-to-day life of the circus, the artistry of high-level physical comedy, and most of all, Mark’s compelling roller-coaster ride of a life story, complete with loss, love, heartbreak, and near magical coincidence. (With a few banana peels and pratfalls thrown in…) From award-winning clown, Mark Gindick, the only clown who achieved featured-performer status in the circus “trifecta” Big Apple Circus, Ringling Bros and Cirque du Soleil, Part masterful and hilarious clown-show, part memoir, part TED-style talk, the lecture targets an audience of who enjoy circus clowning, its history, technique.
The content of this presentation is suitable / appropriate for teens and adults.
Gindick’s collaborators are Adam Koplan (FCT Founding Artistic Director) who is co-writing, with Jessi D. Hill (FCT Interim Artistic Director) directing. FCT received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts to develop Death Defying Schtick.
