A day event for Cornwall residents to be trained in recording dead marine animals around our coastline as part of a national Project.
About this Event

Cornwall Wildlife Trust Marine Strandings Network has been running for nearly 20 years collecting information on dead marine and coastal wildlife which washes up around our county. As a result, it has become a respected and recognised volunteer network collecting nationally important and valuable data for conservation purposes.  Each year we train a new cohort of callout volunteers to assist us in the attendance and recording of stranded animals. This training day is for those who wish to become one of those volunteers.

PLEASE NOTE: This training is for Cornish residents who will attend Cornish strandings, as all other UK strandings are coordinated and managed by the Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP) - https://ukstrandings.org

Callout Volunteer Training

We hope you can join us for a day training session, which will take place both online (in the morning) and in person (at our CWT offices near Truro) - both elements need to be attended and completed to qualify as a volunteer.

During the training we will give you a morning introduction online about; the Marine Strandings Network is and how it works, cetacean (dolphin, whales and porpoise) identification, H&S, and how to use our recording forms for cetaceans and seals to gather the vital records we need.

In the afternoon we will gather in person at our offices to hold a simulated stranding using life-sized model of a dolphin, porpoise, and seal to train you in recording, health and safety, and retrieval procedures. This will be a fun day, but with a serious purpose.

The training will be held online (AM) and in person (PM) at the Cornwall Wildlife Trust offices (near Truro, TR4 8FR). A detailed programme and directions will be sent on confirmation of your attendance closer to the date of the event.

The training costs £15 and you will receive an information pack and a strandings kit to take home with you.  You will also need to bring your own lunch, and be sure to bring very warm clothes, water proofs and sensible shoes with you for the afternoon outdoor session.

In 2022 we are also offering free places to our existing volunteers who wish to partake in a refresher course - please choose the free ticket option. All free ticket attendees will be checked against our active volunteer database.

Booking is essential to attend the training as spaces are limited, by Wednesday 14th September 10am. We will then send you a copy of the programme and a map of the venue by Thursday 15th September in preparation for the 17th.

PLEASE NOTE: This training is for Cornish residents who will attend Cornish strandings, as all other UK strandings are coordinated and managed by the Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP) - https://ukstrandings.org
