"Marine Megafauna in the Anthropocene - Challenges and Solutions" is scheduled at the upcoming AMSA/NZMSS 2021 Conference, Macquarie University, New South Wales July 2021 (just like 2020 never existed).Marine megafauna have been in a state of decline and extinction since the Late Pleistocene. With the Anthropocene set only to accelerate this trend owing to increasing human population and associated impacts, the threats faced are both diverse and complex. Impacts can be devastating both at individual and population levels. While some threats such as plastic ingestion and entanglement have received considerable attention, some less obvious may have influence over large spatial and temporal scales. In many cases, impacts can be synergistic, culminating in a greater overall effect while complicating research and mitigation. This symposium aims to include a wide range of research investigating impacts of climate change, shipping, fishing, exploration, pollution including terrestrial runoff and mining and other threats observed in Oceania waters. This symposium will align conservation stakeholders, including researchers and managers, to discuss both the emerging challenges, as well as the technological advancements, set to shape megafauna conservation in the Anthropocene. Presentations that offer potential solutions to threats across a wide range of megafauna species are particularly welcome.
