We are so pleased to welcome Professor Martin Alexander back to the library for another fascinating history talk!Marianne’s Citizens?” French women in politics, work and culture
We know women over 30 could vote in British House of Commons elections from 1918. But how many realise that French women could not vote for their parliament till April 1944 (and then by decree from General de Gaulle) ? This FoHL talk will explore the social, political and cultural experiences of French women from 1914 via World War II with its polarising narratives of Résistantes vs. collaboratrices horizontales (women accused of sleeping with the German enemy), and on to Françoise Giroud, the first Minister for Women's Rights in 1974. Suffragist activism, the struggle against male-dominated trade unions, women's vital role in the Resistance, 1940-45, and France as "Marianne", an icon that is both female and revolutionary, are central to the story. And the story remains unfinished, France trailing Britain 2-3 for women prime ministers --- and still awaiting a first female President !
Date: Thursday 9th October
Time: 7pm start, doors open 6:30pm
This seated talk will feature an interval with tea, coffee, and plenty of homemade treats.
This event is free with all donations going towards future events and keeping our community library thriving!
