Maria Balshaw & Bob and Roberta Smith: Art and Legacy

Maria Balshaw, director of the Tate since 2017 and author of the new book, Gathering of Strangers: Why Museums Matter, joins the dynamic Ramsgate-based artist Bob and Roberta Smith, who painted FOLKESTONE IS AN ART SCHOOL.
Together, they will delve into the role of museums in shaping cultural legacy and the vital importance of art in contemporary society.
Balshaw will share insights from her new book, exploring how museums and libraries serve as spaces for community gathering, historical reflection, and artistic innovation. Under her leadership, the Tate has expanded its reach and embraced more diverse and inclusive narratives.
Bob and Roberta Smith, an artist known for his vibrant text-based works and passionate advocacy for the arts, will complement this discussion with his unique perspective on the role of art in public life. Smith’s work often blurs the lines between art and activism, making him a powerful voice in the conversation about how museums can serve as catalysts for social change. He’ll bring his unique perspective as an artist and activist, discussing the intersection of art, education, and social change.
In an era where museums are more than just repositories of art, they have become dynamic spaces for dialogue, education, and community engagement. This event will delve into the transformative power of museums and how they contribute to cultural heritage, societal change, and artistic expression.
