The mission of the NXT GEN series is to offer a platform for a new, younger generation of Knoxville based musicians to produce and promote their own music, thus laying the foundation for the success of the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra long into the future. NXT GEN is curated by pianists Sam Adams, Margherita Fava, Taber Gable and guitarist Jack Roben. The Spring ‘23 series will feature three, double-header performances for a total of six distinct musical programs. Details for the March 19 performance are as follows:
Set One: Italian pianist Margherita Fava and her quartet will present music from her debut album “TATATU.” The title is a reference to one of Fava’s first sentences as a child and roughly translates as “I can do it by myself.” The project is self-produced from top to bottom and features a variety of original compositions and arrangements that reflect her unique perspective on the music.
Set Two: Saxophonist/keyboardist Bernell Jones II is a native of Memphis, TN. He graduated from the Jazz Studies program at UTK in 2020, and moved to New York City where he has quickly made a name for himself. Jones has performed with artists as diverse as singer-songwriter Lauryn Hill, rapper Wyclef Jean and trumpeter Philip Harper.
Bernell will present a set of his own music which represents a balance between the Big Apple’s fabled jazz presence and the sound of Memphis’ beloved soul music.
