Pagans in the Pub is the monthly meeting of the Tasmanian Pagan Alliance in Hobart. It is a free event for fellowship and sharing knowledge. Participants are invited to purchase food and drink to enjoy while at the moot. Members arrive from 6pm, our speaker begins at 7pm. Our March speaker will be Tim Phillips, who has been studying astrology for 30 years. He runs the Meetup group "Astrology for Self Knowledge" which meets at the State Cinema on Thursday evenings.
He will begin by illustrating what in means in terms of movement of the planets to say e.g. "John is born on the cusp of Aries" or "Mercury is retrograde" or "Venus has gone into Taurus". He will try to dispel as many myths and misconceptions false ideas on astrology, such as: that it asserts that people are one of twelve different types; that there should be thirteen signs because a new constellation has been discovered; that it has been disproved by science; that astronomers and psychologists do not accept it as legitimate (some do - and, some are astrologers); that it has no mechanism to account for its influence; that it relies on magical forces; that it is a religion or belief-system; that astrological descriptions of a single individual contain elements that contradict each other; that is contravenes the notion that individuals have free will; that it is anti-Christian; that the signs are in the wrong place because of the precession of the equinox.
