On February 3, Democrats, who hold a supermajority on the Indianapolis City-County Council, voted to expel Jesse Brown, the councilor who represents District 13, the district that includes 19 neighborhoods in the Near Eastside and others Downtown. This expulsion has been condemned by NESCO (Near Eastside Community Organization) as "policital retaliation," and as Mirror Indy noted, this move to "shun the most progressive member of their caucus has sparked a backlash from his supporters."This march is part of the backlash.
We believe that 35,000 residents of Indianapolis who live, work, and worship in District 13 have been effectively disenfranchised by the Democratic leadership of the Indianapolis City-County Council. Worse, Councilor Brown was censured for supporting his constituents' concerns about sexual abuse and discrimination scandals in the mayor's office and the insider dealings of the Democrats on the Council who support dismantiling the Indianapolis Public School system.
WHAT WE WANT:
-Democrats will reverse their decision to expel Councilor Brown from the Democratic caucus.
-Caucus leadership will expand Councilor Brown's committee membership from the current number of three to six, the level that his peers are members of.
WHAT WE ARE DOING:
Join us at 4pm on March 3rd in Fletcher Park on the Near East Side. We'll march along the Pogue's Run Trail and Cultural Trail to the City-Council Building at 4:30pm. We'll arrive in time to say "hello" to the Democrats during their caucus meeting (which meets at 5:30pm) and the full March meeting of the City-County Council.
Bring your friends and family. Bring a picnic to eat in Fletcher Park before the march begins. Bring your bikes and strollers, signs and t-shirts, something to bang on and something to bang with.
