On 1 September, the US Supreme Court upheld the "Heartbeat Bill" in Texas - a piece of legislation which amounts to a sociopathic, misogynistic effective abortion ban ; disallowing abortion after 6 weeks, even in the case of rape an incest, and making it possible for private citizens to sue any individual seeking or assisting someone to access abortion services for up to $10,000!
In Texas, a state eight times the size of Ireland where 4.3 million people are defined as 'food insecure', this law, as well as emboldening far-right vigilantes, will spell disaster for working class and poor women, non-binary people and trans men. Working class, poor, rural, black and Latina -- these will be the ones who suffer most appallingly under this deadly law.
As we know in Ireland, overturning this legislation, and winning pro-choice legislation will require mass struggle on the streets , in schools , communities , campuses & workplaces. Across the US on 2 October, mass protest mobilisations will be happening in struggle against this brutal abortion ban.
March and protest at 1pm on 2 October in solidarity with our siblings in Texas and all over the world who have this essential facet of health care stripped away from them! In Ireland too, North and South, we need genuine access -- no one should still be travelling to access abortion healthcare.
We ask all individuals, groups, activists, feminist and LGBTQ organisations, trade unions and trade unionists to join with us on the streets in solidarity on 2 Oct -- without struggle there is no progress !
