The Philosophical Research Society's 7th House Screenings is proud to present a retrospective of mindblowing films by the Hungarian animation master Marcell Jankovics (1941-2021). Considered Hungary's answer to Walt Disney and winner of both an Oscar and Palme D'Or for his short films (Sisyphus and The Struggle, respectively) Jankovics directed the country's first animated feature film (János Vitéz, 1973) before creating his masterpiece and inarguably the most psychedelic animated film of all time – The Son of the White Mare (1981). His brilliant career, with its focus on myths and folktales, culminated with his magnum opus The Tragedy of Man (2011). Nearly 30 years in the making, the epic spans thousands of years, following the archetypal Adam creation myth through the epochs, each in a different animation style – all gorgeously hand drawn. Join us on three Sundays (April 27th, May 4th, and May 11th) to experience Jankovics' artistic genius on the big screen!

JÁNOS VITÉZ (AKA Johnny Corncob)

A visually sumptuous adaptation of Sándor Petőfi’s famed 1845 poem, and the first-ever feature length animated film produced in Hungary, JÁNOS VITÉZ recounts the exploits of strapping young solider Johnny Corncob and his mythic quest to be reunited with Iluska, the great love of his life. Directed by legendary Hungarian animator Marcell Jankovics’ (Son of the White Mare, Sisyphus, The Struggle), János Vitéz’s is the product of 22 months work from 130 members of Hungary’s famed Pannonia Film Studio. A marvel of analog animation deeply inspired by George Dunning’s Yellow Submarine, János Vitéz is both a grand adventure and a significant piece of film history.

ABOUT 7TH HOUSE SCREENINGS

7th House Screenings celebrates the magic of cinema (the 7th Art) and its power to draw community together. Just as astrology’s 7th house relates to connection and relationship, the hallowed ground of the movie house builds congregation – in a space where friends, loved ones, and strangers alike can commune, in hushed darkness, to experience the joy of discovery and transcendent power of collective imagination. Just as The Philosophical Research Society’s founder Manly P. Hall gathered a worldwide spectrum of philosophies, presenting curious seekers with a chance to find their truths and forge their own spiritual paths, 7th House screenings dedicatedly gathers an eclectic selection of films, offering audiences a expansive range of opportunity for cinematic inspiration and upliftment.
