En juin 2023, marcel célébrait le charivari, le renversement, la fête incohérente et bestiale de la vie.
C’était bien, mais trop général.
Pour autant, le groupe belge n’est toujours pas parvenu à pondre le fameux album dit ‘de la maturité’ et s’obstine plutôt à jeter un pont entre le sublime et le ridicule. Une formule qui semble avoir fonctionné : leur premier disque a voyagé jusqu’aux magazines spécialisés belges, néerlandais, français, italiens, jusqu’aux oreilles aguerries du gourou indie Steve Lamacq (BBC).
‘ô fornaiz’, deuxième album cette fois entièrement produit et mixé par Ben Hampson (DITZ, Lambrini Girls,...) a été enregistré en 10 jours au studio Koko de Laurent Eyen, une ancienne boulangerie de Sprimont, près de Liège. marcel se penche ici sur un problème qui a obsédé à la fois les premiers homo sapiens sans doudoune, les philosophes pré-socratiques, les alchimistes médiévaux et les masculinistes amoureux de leur barbecue: le feu. La flamme, l’incendie, la bonne grosse flambée.

Les influences sont larges, souvent anciennes, fumeuses et ardentes, comme le foyer sur lequel marcel a posé sa marmite ces deux dernières années: The Ex, Nina Hagen, This Heat, Catherine Ringer, Jacques Dutronc, Blacklisters, Arno, Jesus Lizard, Can, Nico, Nino Ferrer, Kim Gordon, Amon Tobin, Swans, Béla Bartók, Kurt Weill, Yolande Moreau, Happy Mondays et même les derniers albums de Talk Talk.
« ô fornaiz » sortira en vinyl et digital le 21.03.25 sur Luik Music / Géographie Records et Modulor Music.

Since 2021, Belgian band marcel has managed to offer undemanding yet generous music, exactly halfway between Dead Kennedys and Talk Talk, Nina Hagen and Jacques Dutronc, but with a severe penchant for poetic-horrific lyrics about the strangeness of earthly existence. They'll appeal to your anarchist granny as well as your 5-year-old nephew who thinks he's right-wing, while 76% of adults who've seen them live claim to have felt a tingly, stinging joy, according to the Eurobarometer.
One day, they'll record an album of free jazz or bossa nova in Walloon. But for the time being, they excel in a bastardised, experimental, unorthodox form of punk, un-tranquil and proud as a peacock that has lost all its feathers from bellowing baselessly all over the village. Their latest album was produced and mixed by Ben Hampson (DITZ, Lambrini Girls,...) and will be released by Luik Records and Géographie Records in March 2025. What else is there to say? Euaaaahhhh !
The album 'ô fornaiz' will be released on Luik Music, Geographie Records (via Modulor) on March 21, 2025.
