MapRun is an informal urban orienteering race, where you are given a special map of the local area, pre-marked with 30 checkpoints. You can find the checkpoints in any order and pick your own route between them. Each control is assigned a point value – generally the ones further away are worth more points. The aim is to score as many points as possible, within the given time limit of 60 minutes. If you don’t want to be out for the full 60 minutes you can always come back earlier.Where are the events held?
The events are held once a month on a Wednesday evening in various urban locations over the wither months.
What does the map look like?
Normally on an A4 sheet with streets shown with black lines and paths shown as dotted lines. As with all orienteering maps, there are no street names on the map! Controls are overprinted in purple, and the start and finish is always at the same place and shown by a triangle – start and a double circle - finish.
Are you interested?
If you would like to take part Pre-entries will open and further details will go up on the website and Facebook a few weeks before each race.
What kit do I need?
All you should need is a phone with the MapRun app uploaded, suitable hi-viz clothing, a head torch/light. A compass is not required!
Will I be safe?
We try to use areas that are reasonably well lit and aim to avoid roads with heavy traffic. However, you are still responsible for your own safety just as you would be walking or running around normally. Most people compete individually, although you can choose to run in a group. Under 16’s must take part with an adult.
