"We will pay anything for Lucia books." – Noel Coward, Gertrude Lawrence and Nancy Mitford
Edward Frederick Benson was the son of Queen Victoria’s Archbishop of Canterbury, and a prolific author of historical biographies and ghost stories. But he is, nowadays, best-remembered for his hilariously biting social satires, of which his six novels about Mapp and Lucia are the most enduring – having achieved cult status from the moment they first appeared.
Himself a devotee of the novels, our Director Rob Croser, in 1988, adapted Mapp and Lucia for Independent Theatre. It became the hit of the season, sending delighted audiences scurrying off to bookshops and libraries to get their hands on the novel.
That landmark production starred Pattie Atherton as Miss Mapp, Sheree Sellick as Lucia and David Roach as Lucia's "courtier", Georgie Pillson. Our fans have been begging the company to restage the play ever since.
So, that's what we're doing! We agree that it's time for a new generation to revel in the glorious hilarity of this gem of social satire.
Sheree Sellick and David Roach will reprise their roles, with Julie Quick playing Miss Mapp. The cast of Tilling eccentrics includes a cluster of IT stars – Stuart Pearce, Lyn Wilson, Pam O'Grady, Pru Pole, Chris Bleby, Greg Janzow, Sue Wylie, Ryan Kennealy and Maxine Grubel.
It is being presented – as one of Independent Theatre's hugely popular fully-staged and costumed play-readings – for 3 performances only.
