Southold Historical Museum welcomes repeat visitors each year by offering exciting seasonal exhibits that explore the fascinating history of our town. This summer, the Museum is featuring four in-person exhibits at our two locations, as well as an online art exhibit and sale.
Three of the new exhibits will be on display at the Museum’s Maple Lane Complex, located at 55200 Main Rd., Southold. You’re invited to view the Southold Theatre: Vaudeville to Jesus Christ Superstar exhibit, Saturdays and Sundays, 1pm - 4pm at the Ann Currie-Bell House Mayne Gallery. The exhibit features memorabilia from some of the wonderful local productions that ran in our town. Come reminisce and celebrate the vibrant theatrical culture of Southold.
Also at the Maple Lane Complex, in our Reichert Family Barn, join us for the specially curated exhibit This Land is Made for You and Me. Step into the past and learn about the laborers and their families who worked the land and lived in migrant camps in Southold. Immerse yourself in the images and stories that shed light on this part of history, and take the opportunity to explore and reflect. Admission is included with regular entry. On opening day of this exhibit, June 29, join Dr. Georgette Grier-Key, executive director/chief curator at Eastville Community Historical Society, and Brenda Simmons, founder of Southampton African American Museum for a special panel discussion at 2pm that examines what life was like in the labor camps.
In addition, we will also have an exhibit in the Elfers Collections Center at the Maple Lane Complex featuring our hand-made quilts. Quilts of Bygone Eras will be available as part of the usual Maple Lane Complex admission. Please note, this exhibit will only be open on Saturdays from 1pm – 4pm. Volunteers will be waiting to greet visitors and share their quilting knowledge in the Gallery at the Collections Center.
Southold Historical Museum also operates the Nautical Museum at Horton Point Lighthouse located at 3575 Lighthouse Rd., Southold. This year, the seasonal exhibit space is filled with new images for the “Soaring over Southold: A Collection of Historic Aerial Photographs” exhibit. Come explore aerial photos of Southold Town from the 1930s through 1970s. With a bird’s eye view of Southold, some will recognize familiar landscapes and landmarks. Others might note the changes to the community’s landscape through the years.
Admission price of $5 pp or $10/families includes entry to the Maple Lane Complex and Nautical Museum at Horton Point Lighthouse and all of the exhibits.
One exhibit that you can enjoy from home is the Ten Squared Online Exhibit and Sale starting July 15 – Aug. 31. Titled After the Peconic Bay Impressionists, this non-juried exhibition features 10” by 10” works by local artists, many featuring local scenes. At the turn of the 20th Century, artists were drawn to the East End for its light and beauty. The painters not only painted en plein air, but also painted still life portraits, and genre art. A century later, artists are still coming to the East End to paint. This exhibit will feature the Peconic Bay Artists of the 21st Century. Each work will be sold for $100, half of which will benefit Southold Historical Museum.
