Many Memories, Many Voices: Inclusion and Decolonisation in Museums and Heritage
14 June 2024, 10:30am - 5pm
Belfast Central Library, Music Room
Ethical, collaborative work bringing together communities and the museum/heritage sector is at the heart of inclusion and decolonisation practice. This workshop aims to be a space for dialogue and a platform for collective action, bringing together the community sector, the museum and heritage sectors, and researchers from Northern Ireland and beyond to share and discuss how we can best work together to amplify community voice in culture and heritage. The workshop will deepen understanding of the essential relationship between communities and museums, emphasising inclusion and decolonisation.
Key themes:
- Ethical Collaboration
- Inclusive Practices
- Heritage Decolonisation
- Community Voice
The workshop will be followed by the launch of the exhibition of the MENII Memories, MENII Voices project (MMMV) with art work by Peter Surginor and contributions by participants from across Northern Ireland's communities.
Limited travel bursaries are available to support attendance by groups and individuals for whom these costs may represent a barrier. Please email [email protected] for details.
The workshop is organised by the Many Memories, Many Voices (MMMV) project https://mmmv.org - a partnership between Queen's University Belfast, ArtsEkta, and the Irish Museums Association. It aims to explore social and community heritage connected with colonialism and imperialism and to empower people to reflect on interactions between Northern Irish identities, memories, and objects associated with these themes. We are grateful for support from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Economic and Social Research Council and the Irish Museums Association.
