About this Event
We manufacture realities.”
– Fernando Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet, section 66
The conference theme this year is ‘Manufacture’. Given its intimate connection to literary production of all kinds—from manuscripts to print, from handwritten texts to digital ones—our aim is to facilitate a cross-disciplinary, cross-period interrogation of the manifold meanings of manufacture: be it as a subject for artistic content or intent, a comment on the physical existence of the work of art, or as a means toward aesthetic praxis—whether it be the collaborative work of many hands, or the excessively mannered production of one.
Our keynote speaker this year is Dr Marcus Waithe:
Dr Waithe is an Associate Professor in the English Faculty, Cambridge University. His forthcoming monograph is entitled The Work of Words: Literature, Craft, and the Labour of Mind in Britain, 1830-1940, due from Edinburgh University Press in 2023.
You can find the programme for the conference at the bottom of this page, or on our website.
This will be an in person event on UCL's Bloomsbury Campus.
All the details of the conference will be posted over the coming weeks on our website: https://manufacture2022.wordpress.com/
You can also keep up to date by following us on Twitter (@manufacture2022).

Covid Safety:
The theatre at UCL will have a capacity of 75% and is well ventilated. UCL still advises that you continue to wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces in other settings where you may come into contact with people you do not normally meet (unless you are exempt). If you have any symptoms of COVID or have had close contact with someone who has tested positive, please let us know.
