Friday, January 2, 9:00-11:00 AM Join Dr. Bill Dunson from the Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society and Lemon Bay Conservancy for a nature walk at Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve (3120 Gasparilla Pines Blvd., Englewood). The topic of the day will be SALT WATER ECOLOGY. The Preserve is an excellent place to examine the transition between fresh and salt water habitats. We will consider how plants and animals must adapt to salinity changes and why biodiversity changes so radically in coastal habitats. Recent changes in mangrove growth along the borders of the tidal lagoons are quite extraordinary and illustrate a little known predominance of white mangroves in such conditions. The role of Succession and tidal dispersion of propagules will be discussed. This event is free, and all are welcome to participate. For more information, contact [email protected].
