About this Event
Mandarin Express partners with artist Xinan Helen Ran and Lately Cafe to present an immersive workshop inspired by The Mandarin Project, a research-based body of artwork that investigates the dual existence of “mandarin” as both a fruit and a language. Through this playful angle, Ran's project explores linguistics, cultural hybridity, and Asia–U.S. migration routes.
This hands-on, discussion-driven workshop features a scent-design session focused on imagining a future citrus. Participants will translate the idea of hybridization into an experimental olfactory practice, blending materials extracted from different citrus varieties whose fragrances shift according to their genetic makeup and terroir. This sensorial exercise offers audiences an unconventional way to connect with their own migratory backgrounds through smelling and learning about mandarin-derived citrus.
Open to anyone curious about art, scent, language, and storytelling. Your ticket includes one (1) drink from Lately Cafe, and all workshop materials will be provided. No prior experience required.
