This is a programme of music that will comfort. We’ll tell tales of nymphs and naiads that fill the air with their songs of longing and allure. Songs of solace, and songs of joy.
Returning to the magical acoustic of the Victoria Hall, Manchester Collective is joined by soprano Ruby Hughes to present an intimate and eclectic programme spanning music from the Renaissance to the present day. The set opens with the bright, shimmering tones of Caroline Shaw’s Valencia, named after the sunburst glow of a perfect summer orange. Then, the exquisite agony of Dowland’s Laments, followed by Debussy’s sensual and fantastic musical settings of three Sapphic poems. A sprightly, newly arranged set of traditional Scottish folk songs contrasts further with Mahler’s unforgettably moving ‘Urlicht’ (Primordial Light), expressing the heartfelt desire for relief from ‘man’s direst need and pain’.
