Course Description: This single-day interactive course will focus on the evaluation and treatment of adolescent athletes as well as pediatric patients presenting with common musculoskeletal and neuromuscular dysfunctions. The purpose of this course is to advance the understanding of current research to provide best-practice care and optimal treatment progression in the clinic across the continuum of common childhood sports-related and developmental dysfunctions. A combination of lecture, small group case study discussion, and hands-on/experiential lab will ultimately lead to well-informed care and enhanced patient outcomes. The lecture will review physiological and psychological factors that are particular to adolescent and pediatric populations and rehabilitations strategies and appropriate communication considering those factors. The lecture content relating to the adolescent athlete will cover current literature on overall athletic development and sport demands, injury prevention, concussion, ACLR post-operative care, and return to sport progression and testing. Lecture content relating to the care of the pediatric patient will include torticollis, developmental delay, hypotonia, and idiopathic toe-walking. The course will include an emphasis on communication with all parties involved in patient success including parents/guardians, coaches and/or athletic trainers, and across healthcare specialties (consults for OT, orthotic prescription, etc.) to optimize patient recovery timelines and outcomes. Breakout lab sessions will consist of hands-on work to practice assessment and treatment interventions, as well as practice educational and communication strategies in small groups while being provided with instructor feedback. This will be an intermediate-level course building off participant experience and knowledge regarding the plan of care development, exercise prescription, and pain science.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This online course will focus on the evaluation and treatment of adolescent athletes with a specific emphasis on lifestyle factors and bone health, as well as the evaluation of pediatric patients and typical developmental stages and milestones. One purpose of this course is to advance the understanding of current research to provide best-practice care and optimal treatment progression in the clinic for adolescent bony pathologies such as physeal overuse injuries and fractures. The other purpose of this course is to advance the understanding of fetal development principles and typical milestone progression in conjunction with current research on the practical features necessary to create and execute a successful plan of care for pediatric patients. Recordings will review the role of lifestyle factors including diet and physical activity in the developing bony skeleton, as well as the assessment and management of apophyseal and physeal injuries. Recordings will also cover foundational principles of fetal development and typical childhood milestone progression and how to best evaluate and provide treatment for infant and toddler populations with an emphasis on how to effectively establish a therapeutic alliance with both the patient and the caretaker.
