Mana is official (we are a licensed business in the State of Alaska) and kicking off with an event at Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) this summer!The founding members of the Mana Team will be presenting an interactive workshop at the FANHS Biennial Conference on July 18, 2024 titled, Mana: Bridging Filipino American Generations Through Storytelling in Alaska.
In this one-hour workshop, Mana will share how we collected oral histories from Filipino elders across Alaska, from World War II military bases halfway across the Aleutian Islands to the canneries of Kodiak. We will illustrate how we investigated unrecorded Alaska history, curated a museum exhibit to honor our community, and hosted a celebration with over 1,500 people for Alaska’s inaugural Filipino American History Month. We’ll engage in the oral history process together, challenging what it means “to inherit” by exploring how storytelling can encourage intergenerational connection. And, we’ll look at other ways Mana plans to record and showcase the whispered stories of Filipinos in Alaska.
We will share photographic art from our first exhibit, and attendees are encouraged to ask us questions about making media, curating an exhibit, and more by emailing [email protected].
