Synopsis
The discussion aims to examine how Malta’s geopolitical position, domestic developments, and the broader Mediterranean and European context influenced the extent to which it could adopt a policy of neutrality at different historical stages, and how this policy evolved when applied. It will consider how the concept of neutrality has been understood at different points in Malta’s history, the historical circumstances that prompted the island to pursue neutrality, and the ways in which Malta’s interactions with foreign powers shaped the practical application of this policy.
