Musical Style: JazzMaliq Wynn-Johnson is a drummer, producer, and composer from Denver, Colorado. His passion for music was sparked at a young age, raised by the diaspora of Black American Music. Through his mother, father and grandmother he had fallen in love with genres such as Gospel, Rock n Roll, Funk, Soul, and Reggae. Guided by his love for these musical styles, he began deepening his relationship to Black American Music by learning jazz through the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts (CCJA) in middle school. He attended Denver East High where he had taken instruction from Kieth Oxman and began to forge a relationship with saxophonist Daved Liebman. Maliq then furthered his music education at The Berklee College of Music, taking mentorship under drummers Francisco Mela, Ian Froman, and Neal Smith, as well as bassist Dave Santoro. He has had the honor of sharing the stage with monumental artists such as Jason Moran, Greg Gisbert, Hugh Ragin, Bambaata Marley, Mystic Marley, and many others. Maliq has performed at Five Points Jazz Festival, Dazzle Denver, Red Rocks, The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and other acclaimed venues across Denver and New York.
