About this Event

Malik Gaines and Hamed Sinno offer performances at the intersection of music and theater that explore new and old technologies (synthesizers and vocoders, a piano and a microphone) for investigating the relationship between queerness, memory, and song.

---

Malik Gaines is a founder of the performance group My Barbarian; author of Black Performance on the Outskirts of the Left and many essays about art and performance; co-artistic director of The Industry, LA's experimental opera company; and associate professor of Performance Studies at NYU Tisch.

Hamed Sinno is a writer, musician, and social justice advocate. Their current research explores digital vocality as a site of political negotiation and dis/embodiment of identarian subjectivities. Sometimes H writes musicals. Sometimes H likes to call them operas. They often write, and lecture about popular culture as engaged practice. They have been the lyricist and front-person for Mashrou Leila since 2008, with a BFA from the Department of Architecture and Design at the American University of Beirut.

This is tentatively planned as a live indoor event at St. Mark's Church. We are following guidelines laid out by the CDC and the State of New York. These include: limiting the number of attendees to 50% capacity; requiring proof of vaccination be shown at the door upon arrival; and requiring and providing face masks, as well as hand sanitizer stations. Before each event, we will also be conducting rapid tests for all performers and event staff. Attendees are required to register in advance, and contact information is collected at the point of registration in the event that we need to support any public health efforts around contact tracing. We are committed to the safety of our performers, audience, and event staff, and will be fully prepared to update any of these plans and protocols as circumstances continue to evolve. We are grateful to attendees for helping us maintain safety within our present public health context, and look forward to holding meaningful shared listening space together.

Please arrive prepared to show proof of vaccination and a photo ID at the door. Proof of vaccination may be in the form of your vaccination card (or a picture of your card), the NYC Covid Safe app, or the Excelsior app. If, for medical reasons, you have not been vaccinated, you may instead bring documentation of a negative PCR test taken within the last 72 hours.

The Poetry Project is committed to making our event programming inclusive and accessible for individuals with different experiences, and are continuously working to improve and expand upon accessibility measures. St. Mark’s Church is wheelchair accessible. Please call The Poetry Project at 212-674-0910 or email us at [email protected] in advance of events to arrange accessibility. To access the Parish Hall, attendees must pass through the main sanctuary and a corridor. There are 2 sets of double doors and two single doors to go through. The smallest of these doors at the end of the corridor is 28.5 inches wide. The Poetry Project will arrange for an ASL interpreter for any event with one week's advance notice. If you have a question about anything please contact us at [email protected].

You can access a non-captioned live stream of this event here. A fully captioned recording of the event will be made available on The Poetry Project youtube page at a later date.
