Someone is mailing expletive-laden letters to devout spinster Edith Swan, played by Olivia Coleman, who lives with her timid mother and abusive father. Edith is quick to blame her neighbour Rose, an Irish immigrant and single mother played by Jessie Buckley. Rose denies any guilt, but the Chief Constable is determined to prosecute. Based on a true story, Wicked Little Letters is set in Littlehampton, England in the 1920s. The chocolate box setting belies the fury of repressed rage which explodes as tensions mount in the community. Coleman captures Edith’s air of prim superiority, while Buckley is rambunctious as Rose. Wicked Little Letters is rated MA15+ because it contains strong coarse language—much to the delight and horror of many of the characters involved!
