About this Event

MAKU Soundsystem is an immigrant band from New York City. With most of its members hailing from Colombia, MAKU embodies an active quest for identity through sound and bodies in motion, and puts on a party for everyday people. Born in 2010 the band has independently released two full-length albums, two EPs, a highly-acclaimed album on Glitterbeat and toured across the U.S., Europe and Cabo Verde with their fiery grooves.

Guitarist Camilo Rodriguez is the mastermind behind M.A.K.U SoundSystem and came up with the group’s name. The first part of their name, M.A.K.U, is borrowed from the Nukak Maku tribe indigenous to the Southern part of Colombia. This tribe is unique in that it managed to remain without any outside human contact until the late 1980’s. Despite being a peaceful people, the Nukak Maku tribe has since been persecuted within Colombia and exiled out of its original territory, a move that has forced the tribe to abandon several of its traditions and adopt a more western way of life. Additionally, the word Maku means ‘low class person’ in the indigenous languages in the Southern region of Colombia. Adding this context to ‘Sound System’, referring to the huge public parties thrown in the streets of Colombia and Jamaica in the 60’s and 70’s, M.A.K.U SoundSystem stands for a party for the people.

Will be rescheduled in the event of rain.
