Making Cordage from the Land

On its own, a stray thread cannot accomplish much. But when several fibers are twisted into yarn, and yarn into strands, and strands into string or rope, a once feeble thing becomes both strong and flexible—a hybrid material of limitless possibility. It’s difficult to think of an aspect of human culture that is not laced through with some form of string or rope.
Making cordage is a process of taking plant materials and twisting them together to make string or rope. Humans have been making cordage for over 60,000 years. It is indigenous to all cultures on this planet, and is a beautiful way to connect with the land, your hands and our ancestors.
In this class we will work with locally foraged plants and learn to weave them into cordage; a foundational skill to build upon for other weaving techniques. We’ll create our own wild woven friendship bracelets and leave with a new skill that can keep our hands busy and hearts happy throughout the year.

She’s also the founder of Old Ways Wisdom—a place to bridge the gap of disconnect in these wild times by rekindling the old ways and fostering relationship with the land, our bodies, and the ancient wisdom in our bones through deep storywork and ancestral skills. Mandy’s had the amazing privilege of learning these ancient skills like weaving from many different elders, incredible teachers, and through spending time with Indigenous tribes in various places.
