Book Arts Workshop - Virginia Center for the Book – Junk Journals: Part I - Sunday, July 14, 2024, Noon – 4 PM
About this Event

Junk Journals are easy to make and, by definition, use materials you already have: junk mail, envelopes, used greeting cards, off-size scraps of paper from notebooks, posters, maps, office supplies, calendars, museum catalogs… images and textures that appeal to you.

We’ll explore the concept, then – in the interest of time – use materials provided by the instructor to create a simple 3-signature, 6” x 9” journal using a 3-hole pamphlet stitch.

The “challenge” of these journals lies in letting go of preconceived notions of what defines a “book” or a “page.” This class will introduce you to the concept and basic techniques, which you can then apply to your own paper stash. The size can be scaled up or down based on what you have.

At an optional follow-up workshop in September, we will use the same binding technique to make a hardback journal using re-purposed or discarded book covers. (See separate announcement and sign-up)
