MAKE YOUR OWN KIMONO INSPIRED GARMENT
WITH NICKY MAY
Come along and join us for this five week course with tutor, Nicky May, and make your very own Kimono inspired garment from start to finish!
Traditionally kimono are made with silk, but cotton can be used and is named as the casual cousin- Yukata. The Yukata is often used as a summer lightweight kimono which also let's us play with the style of the garment making it more contemporary- perhaps adding pockets etc.
We will use the traditional method of Shibori to tie-dye our fabrics, then add pattern with stencils and block printing. The Yukata can then be hand sewen or machined to bring all the pieces together. Embellishments and an obi band will complete the look.
Tutor, Nicky wears her Kimono at the beach and for holiday lounging, or choose to go smarter or more wild with your ideas: it's a great statement piece for any wardrobe and fits all shapes!
You will need to select and supply 3 metres of fabric- cotton based no synthetics. Students are welcome to bring silk, but remember we will be experimenting! You will also need a fabric to line your Yukata with if using silk (as it's often transparent.) Pins, sewing needles, a tape measure and a good scissors (if you have them) are also required, and threads can be purchased to suit your kimono once it’s been dyed.
