On the morning of 5th May 1930 an unknown pilot called Amy Johnson took off in Jason the Gipsy Moth bi-plane from Croydon Aerodrome. Her destination was Darwin and this flight would see Amy become the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia!
She flew in her open cockpit bi-plane Jason over 11000 miles across the world. Her flight was an exciting scary dangerous and amazing journey.
Amy saw to it that Jason's fuel was topped up that his engine was working properly and that he was looked over every evening. In return Jason carried Amy thousands of miles; through the freezing cold the sweltering heat and even sheltered her during a frightening dust storm.
Together they flew over jagged mountains and across shark infested seas! They even crashed landed during a monsoon but they lived to fly again and to see three arched rainbows over the Java Sea hailing their approach to Australia.
Amy had taken off as an unknown pilot but after nineteen and a half days of flying she and Jason landed in Darwin to a hero's welcome! Amy's flight made her name making her an international superstar and securing her place in aviation history!
Led by experienced creative facilitator Jenny Lockyer this hands-on session encourages children to use their engineering and creative skills to assemble their very own model of Amy's beloved Jason and find out more about Amy's incredible journey.
All materials are provided.
