About Sugar Skulls
Sugar skulls, or calaveras de azúcar, are a traditional folk art from Southern Mexico used to celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). These colorful and decorative skulls are made from sugar and decorated with icing, foil, beads, and feathers. They symbolize the departed souls and are often placed on altars (ofrendas) to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away. The tradition of making sugar skulls dates back to the 18th century and combines indigenous practices with Spanish influences, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Mexico.
