Using machines and hand cut joinery techniques you will learn to make a beautiful solid wood stool with through mortise and tenon joinery (so that it is visible from the top) and tusk tenons (wedged, instead of glued). This stool could also be used as a side table.
For this two day course we will start with milled timber. You will learn how the joinery was planned and why, how to mark joinery out on your boards using hand tools such as the marking gauge.
We will use the router and drill press/mortiser to cut grooves and mortises, then clean them up by hand using chisels. The bandsaw or a hand saw will be used to cut the tenons.
Mortise and tenon joinery is a fundamental part of furniture making. Through making this stool you will gain an understanding of how to hand cut and machine cut these joints using a few different techniques. By cutting a total of 4-6 mortises you will come out of this short course with a fair bit of practice and understanding of how they work. You will also learn how to shape the stool using hand tools like the block plane and spokeshave, meaning everyone's stool will be unique. You will also learn how a glue-up works and how to sand and oil properly.
This will be a challenging class but is suitable for beginners and more experienced woodworkers.
