About this Event
This Thursday, January 15th, from 2–6pm, we’re bringing one of India’s most joyful traditions to the heart of New York City at Sheep Meadow, in Central Park.
Makar Sankranti marks the sun’s return toward longer days — a moment of renewal, warmth, and gratitude that’s celebrated across India with music, sweets, and skies full of colorful kites. For generations, families and strangers alike have gathered on rooftops and open fields to fly kites, share food, and welcome the light together.
We’re recreating that spirit here — open, joyful, and unmistakably Indian in tradition, yet fully inclusive of everyone who calls NYC home.
What this gathering is
- 🪁 A simple, happy afternoon of kite flying
- 🌞 A celebration of sunlight, seasonal change, and community
- 🇮🇳 A chance to experience (or reconnect with) a beloved Indian festival
- 🌆 A uniquely NYC moment — many cultures, one shared sky
What to know
- Bring your own kite if you have one
- No experience or cultural background required — curiosity is enough
- Come for a few minutes or stay the whole afternoon
Tickets & snacks
- The gathering is free and open to all
- A $5 optional donation ticket helps us share traditional Indian snacks and keep the event community-powered
This isn’t a performance or a program — it’s a pause. A shared patch of winter sunlight. A chance to look up, feel joy, and celebrate an ancient tradition together in the middle of the city.
Bring a kite, bring friends, or just bring yourself.
Let’s fill the NYC sky with color. 🪁
