The mela is world’s largest religious congregation, by any means, since more than 70 million pilgrims visit the mela over a period of two months.Kumbh mela instantly conjures up sights of a mammoth crowd of Hindu pilgrims gathered to have an experience of a lifetime, that of a ritual bath in one of the holy rivers or sangam, to wash away their sins.
As per Hindu mythology, Amrit or elixir of immortality was got after churning the seas, (Samudra manthan), and a tussle to possess it, ensued between Suras (Gods) and asuras (demons). As the Gods carried away the nectar in a kumbha or a pitcher to heaven, a few drops of Amrit or Nectar are said to have spilled on to some places and in rivers below, purifying them. These are the places where Kumbh melas are held at 12 or 6 yearly intervals, depending upon the movement of stellar constellations and time. There are four places that hold the Kumbh mela, by rotation, Haridwar and Nashik host the poorna kumbh , once in 12 years , while Allahabad (Prayag) and Ujjain host the ardh kumbh mela at 6 year intervals . The added attraction in Allahabad is, a thousand fold more sanctity, because it is on the banks of sangam, a confluence of 3 holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. It is widely believed that Kumbh mela was started by Adi Shankar almost 800 years ago, to bring together learned religious men and Sadhus from all over India for debates and discourse for the common man as well, at these holy places. Ascetics and sadhus come out of their isolation to these fairs, for debates and exchange of views with others from all over the country. They arrive by different modes of transport like palanquins, horses, camels, elephants or simply march on foot and it is a sight to behold. The most prominent ones are the Naga sadhus, and aghoris, who take place of pride and prominence in the order of bathing on select dates, the grand bath or Shahi snaan, believed to guarantee the maximum amount of purification of the soul. The best part is that the entire mela is a peaceful congregation, spanning over almost two months. Documenting it is an experience by itself, but would be difficult without local guidance in terms of arrangements for stay, travel and reaching the correct spots at the right hour. This is where Team 365pix comes in to facilitate and ensure you get the best opportunities of experiencing the fair in its true spirit as also take back images of a lifetime.
