About the artist:
Throughout his life, Melvin “MAESTRO” Lightford has created numerous memorable experiences in the world of music. He got his start working for A-list artists such as Mickey Guyton, Ledisi, Corbin Bleu, Dave Stewart, Keb Mo, Kirk Whalum, Sheléa, Michael McDonald, and many more.
After leaving his hometown of Nashville, TN and moving to Los Angeles, Maestro was hired to co-compose the music for VH1’s first ever Christmas special movie, Adventures In Christmasing. He later became the lead composer for the musical biopic, Remember Me: A Mahalia Jackson Story. This film is currently streaming on Hulu, and the original sound is available on all major music streaming platforms.
Recently, Maestro has generated a lot of buzz with the release of his sophomore record, SIR WELLINGTON. This collection of big band music was written and composed out of Maestro’s love for some of his favorite big band composers; Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Quincy Jones. If you tend to gravitate to up tempo swing tunes, then “Hot Potato” was made for you. This tune will have you toe tapping and foot stomping in no time. But if you are the type of person who loves the fusion of swing and afro-cuban music, you should skip down the track list to “The Affair”. It showcases a solo trombone playing energetic melodies that lead to a battle between the drummer and percussionist. This album also features a tribute to Duke Ellington with a song entitled “Hello Mr. Duke”. It is Maestro’s musical interpretation of what it would be like to meet him. Throughout this album, you can clearly hear how these iconic jazz composers have musically impacted Maestro.
In addition to being an accomplished pianist, music producer, and film composer, Maestro is the author of the one-of-a-kind piano book, The Piano Book I Wish I Had: Learning Piano With Maestro. Since its grand debut, his piano book has gained some national success. Not only are individuals around the U.S. using his book, W. O. Smith Music School and F. H. Jenkins Prep added his book as a teaching aid to help their students learn how to play the piano.
