Tempera Mente brings forgotten musical treasures of the 17th century to life with fresh intensity.Five singers and a continuo player – all specialists in early music – came together in the Netherlands after years of performing with leading European ensembles. In 2024 they decided to embark on a new path together: Tempera Mente.
In their new program, Madonna mia!, the ensemble follows Christina of Sweden on her extraordinary journey to Rome. This remarkable woman chose to be queen of the arts rather than queen of Sweden. She abdicated the throne, converted to Catholicism, and set out for the Eternal City.
Soon, the court of this “Athens of the North” became a vibrant cultural hub. Christina surrounded herself with leading writers and musicians, among them Carissimi, Stradella, Melani, and Alessandro Scarlatti. Tempera Mente revives the sound world of her circle: from the dazzling Magnificat by Scarlatti to forgotten gems by Melani.
Madonna mia! is a fiery ode to Mary — and to the transformative power of art and music.
